Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is a condition that is shown within 9.4% of U.S. children ages 2-17―including 2.4% of children ages 2-5 and 4%-12% of school-aged children, with boys being twice as likely to be diagnosed twice as girls. How we decide to help our children adapt to this disorder at a young age can significantly help or hurt them in the future as adults.

Things to know

ADHD is a chronic condition that makes it difficult for children to control their impulses and behavior. Symptoms typically appear along with another mental disorder and can lead to problems learning and issues with language. ADHD can often go untreated with the child simply being written off as rowdy or labeled as a bad kid or a constant daydreamer. Helping your children early on is incredibly important, as meeting with a pediatrician can allow for a long-term treatment plan greatly mitigating the symptoms. Left untreated, it can have effects on their grades, relationships, and job security as adults.

How to help

Once again speaking with a pediatrician to properly diagnose your child in order to set up a long-term treatment plan with education on ADHD for both the parents and child, medications, and consistent follow-ups to make sure your child is on the right track to a healthy life. Some helpful treatments are also available here at saving your brain.
